Abstract

THE FIRST STAGE OF TURKIFICATION OF ANATOLIA: BULGARS IN THE MIDDLE TAURUS REGION
The traditional Cilicia region (present–day Çukurova and its surroundings), Tarsus being the outstanding urban center, was established as a military march against Byzantium by the Muslim Caliphate. The latter managed to consolidate Muslim population of the region by bringing various peoples from distant lands. One of them is the Muslim Bulgar community brought likely via Adriatic from the Hungarian Kingdom. They kept their existence for a long time in the region, and behaved as a likely autonomous political entity during the Turkification period of Anatolia, first under the Saljukids, then Karamanids. It seems those Bulgars lost their dialects in the course of time among the Turkmen population, and started to speak in Oğuz dialect. Some other Turkic groups, too, came to Anatolia in previous times, however, it is possible to say that the Bulgars were the first Turkic group preserving their identity, and remaining until the final Turkification of Anatolia.
